Taste is an Individual Thing
Everyone’s taste buds are not the same. Maybe that’s why Baskin-Robbins came out with their 31 flavors of ice cream. Some people like spicy food. Others prefer more mild flavors. Some people have a higher tolerance for salty flavors. Because what you spin for becomes your recipes, feel free to “kick it up a notch” as Emeril Lagasse would say if you want it spicier. Add some Tabasco sauce, cayenne pepper, jalapeno or chipotle chiles or more garlic, salt and pepper. Trying to decrease your salt intake? Then feel free to add more of the herbs and spices recommended in the recipe. Remember, Spin-a-Recipe® wants you to have it “your way.”
Being able to select from a variety of ingredients gives you that opportunity to personalize the dishes you make. They literally become yours and you can take the credit.
Cooking Healthy and Loving It
Many people believe that “healthy eating” is synonymous with eating “health food”, which often doesn’t taste good but is supposed to be good for you. Nothing could be further from the truth with Spin-a-Recipe® . For us, it’s all about the food. We believe that you can still indulge even if you need to lose the bulge. When it doesn’t affect the final flavor of a dish, low-fat varieties of ingredients are used. But sometimes only butter will do, and then it’s used judiciously so you still can enjoy the flavors you crave. A dish isn’t unhealthy just because it contains butter or sugar. It’s how the particular dish fits into your overall day’s intake that you need to watch.
Using Artificial Ingredients is Your Choice
We at Spin-a-Recipe® prefer to cook with natural ingredients, not artificial ones. Many artificial ingredients affect the final flavor of a dish in a negative way. That’s not to say that recipes don’t use low-fat versions of ingredients. When fat calories can be removed from a dish without sacrificing flavor, why not? Our philosophy is we’d rather eat less of something that contains more calories but tastes great than eat a lot of something just because it has fewer calories but doesn’t taste very good. You decide what works for you.
Ingredient Substitutions
To a large extent, our health depends upon what we eat. With heart disease being the number one killer of Americans, if dishes can be made with ingredients that help lower blood cholesterol or blood pressure, it makes sense to do so. For example, a traditional recipe for an omelet would call for whole eggs. However, that omelet could be made a little healthier by using an egg substitute (which is just egg whites) for some of the whole eggs. The flavor isn’t compromised nor is the pleasure of the dish sacrificed. On the other hand, because of the cooking qualities of egg yolks, you can’t always remove all the egg yolks from a recipe. That’s why you’ll find some recipes that include eggs and not egg substitutes.
Even though the government is now suggesting that Americans eat less sodium, we don’t have to become sodium-phobic as we’ve done with fat. Using a salt-substitute doesn’t produce the same end result as regular salt. With that said, you will notice that some of the recipes recommend reduced-sodium ingredients when available. That’s so you have more control over how much sodium you eat. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t wait until the dish is on the table to salt it. The salt then just overpowers the actual flavors of the dish. Salting during the cooking process helps develop the flavors better.
I Was Hoping to Make Chicken Tonight
Many recipe websites allow you to search on particular ingredients you’d like to cook. Because Spin-a-Recipe® is a unique approach to cooking, allowing you to spin the slot machine wheels for the recipe and ingredients, it would be impossible for you to search on particular ingredients. But here’s a hint: if you’ve chosen some dish that includes meat, there almost always will be chicken as one of the meat choices. It just means you may have to spin several times to get it to come up. Now, we wouldn’t want to give away all our secrets, but we figured we’d share that one with you.
Not All of the Wheels Show Ingredients
Because different recipes will require a different number of ingredients that you can spin for, you may find that not all the wheels show ingredients. If that’s true, instead of an ingredient in the wheel window, you’ll see the Spin-a-Recipe® logo appear.
You'll also notice that the picture of the dish doesn't always match
what the ingredient wheels are showing. That's because the recipe image
can only show what one combination of the ingredients would look like.
Not knowing what you will end up choosing, we can only provide you with
an example.
Make It a Family Affair
Eating should be a pleasurable experience for all. If Spin-a-Recipe® can help get families to sit down at the table to enjoy a meal together, that’s great. So get your kids involved. Let them spin for dinner. Who knows, you may have an aspiring chef in the family.
